Speaking at the State of the Nation debate in Cape Town today (13 February 2024), it’s been revealed that Lindiwe Zulu is Tintswalo’s mother. Not just that, the Minister of Social Development is also her grandmother and aunty. Genuine.

I think we can all agree that what started as an inventive way for Ramaphosa’s speechwriters to communicate 30-years of ‘pro-poor policies’ has backfired rather spectacularly. This is largely due to the fact that his SONA 2024 address read more like an ANC campaign launch than a dialogue on the state of South Africa. Furthermore, everyone should steer clear of his Democracy’s Child analogy, lest they hope to use it as a punchline.

In case you missed it, last week, Ramaphosa’s speech writers created a fictitious character called ‘Tintswalo’. Peggy backing off the taxpayer’s dime, she was born free in 1994 and received free health care and lived in a house provided by the state. Tintswalo’s parents received SASSA child support grants to ease the burden.

And that’s how they could afford school fees and nutritious meals her whole life. Finally, Tintswalo received funding through the NSFAS, went to college and got a qualification that set her up for life. Or so the story goes …

In a bid to show she could relate to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s yarn, now we know Lindiwe Zulu is Tintswalo’s mother. Erm … and grandmother, and aunty. As reported by The Citizen, Zulu says in 30 years she has seen the changes the ANC have wrought in her own life and in the lives of those around her.

At the SONA debate she said the following: “I am standing here as a mother of Tintswalo, I am an aunty and a grandmother to Tintswalo. Here we have grandfathers, uncles and fathers of Tintswalo, those that wanted to ensure she had a better future,” Zulu said.

ANC EXCEEDED EXPECTATION

“We are currently providing regular income support each month to 4-million older persons, 1-million adults and 160 000 children with disabilities. More than 13-million children from poor families receive child support grants,” said Zulu.

Because Lindiwe Zulu is Tintswalo’s mother, she believes the ANC has lived up to and exceeded expectations in overcoming the apartheid regime. She says the government has been paying government grants since 1994, even when the economy has faltered. This is the ruling party’s responsibility to ensure that ‘those who have nothing, have something.’
