South Africa’s birthrate has been declining over the years. Here’s why…

WHY IS BIRTHRATE SLOWING DOWN?

eNCA reported on Saturday, 2 March that South Africa’s birthrate has been slowing down over the years.

The publication adds that the current fertility rate is 2.1 births, but South African women on average are giving birth to 2.3 children.

This is due to a variety of reasons such as better healthcare, contraceptives, and delayed marriages. Another factor that’s causing the decline is the cost of raising children.

“40 percent of babies are born into households that earn less than R5 000 per month,” adds the publication.

SOUTH AFRICANS RESPOND: ‘LESS POVERTY’

@Ori_RSA: “Systematic depopulation strategies are working overtime. This is definitely not a good thing at all. A global threat to civilisations!

@Penelope_Makala: “Yah! It’s better to be mother of one and continue struggling than to have a lot of them and struggle to maintain them. We’re doing this alone.”

@BafanaSurprise: “This calls for less poverty in the next coming years.”

@AgriGrowthBuzz: “Kushubile the rate of unemployment is at its highest so we can’t afford new bundle of joy.”

@ItisSamhere: “On the contrary, the abortion rate is on the rise.”

@sipho_monyane: “This economy is very difficult to just have a child unplanned. I’m guessing more young people are realising this.”
