Australia’s national carrier Qantas will introduce a different aircraft and adjust the days it flies between Sydney and Johannesburg in 2024.

The move effectively enables the airline to increase capacity on the route and allows for enhancements in the services it offers on its flights.

Next year Qantas will introduce larger aircraft on its scheduled flights between Sydney and Johannesburg.

At present, the airline serves the route using a Boeing 787 aircraft. However, from next July it will deploy an Airbus A380 for these flights.

The move comes after several international airlines axed their Airbus A380 aircraft due to reduced passenger volumes during the pandemic.

Not only will this adjustment increase passenger capacity on Qantas’ flights between Johannesburg and Sydney.

The larger aircraft will also mean that more premium economy and business class seats will be available on this route.

The news will be welcomed by travellers who are prepared to pay for extra space on these long-haul flights.

According to Executive Traveller, the Australian flag carrier will no longer operate daily flights between Sydney and Johannesburg from mid-2024.

The frequency of the Johannesburg service will reduce to between four and six flights per week, depending on the time of year.

The change will come into effect on 8 July 2024, when the carrier deploys the double-decker Airbus A380 on the route.

Currently, Qantas operates daily direct services between Johannesburg and Sydney. It resumed these flights after Australia removed all pandemic-related restrictions.

Qantas is seeing strong passenger demand for its flights since no other airline offers direct services between the two nations.

South African Airways (SAA) operated popular flights between Johannesburg and Perth until the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. The airline has announced that it will restart these services in March 2024.
