Imagine transforming your entertainment area into the ultimate relaxation zone with a water feature simulating the soothing sound of a babbling brook in the forest. Then, reclining in a comfy chair and lifting your feet on a footstool while the day’s stress ebbs from your muscles. Sounds heavenly.

If you are planning an upgrade of your entertainment area, make sure to consult with a Plumbing Industry Registration Board (PIRB) plumber to ensure your soothing entertainment area does not become a swamp of disaster.

PIRB registered plumbers have the experience and skills to ensure your plumbing requirements are executed efficiently and professionally.

Ever heard of PIRB? Here’s what you need to know.

PIRB is a trusted professional body regulating the plumbing industry. It is important to note that PIRB is recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority. PIRB’s main role is to monitor the competency level of the plumbing industry. Want to know more? Read here.

Let’s chat with our plumbing expert, Richard Bailie

Richard Bailie

Richard Bailie has actively been involved with the plumbing industry for many years. He has witnessed many success stories of happy homeowners who renovated their entertainment areas with a PIRB registered plumber. On the flip side, he has also seen many plumbing nightmares after shortcuts were taken with unregistered plumbers to save a buck or two.

Let’s ask Richard a few questions. If you have any other question, please comment on this article and we will make sure it gets to Richard.

What is a PIRB Certificate of Compliance and when is it issued?

A PIRB Certificate of Compliance (“CoC”) is a written declaration confirming that the plumbing work executed is according to the required standards expected of qualified and registered plumbers. It safeguards the consumer that the plumbing work is compliant with all the plumbing laws and regulations in South Africa.

As a homeowner, you should insist on a Certificate of Compliance whenever a plumber executes work on your premises. Although it is only a mandated legal requirement for PIRB registered plumbers to issue a PIRB Certificate of Compliance on works done on a geyser, solar water heater or heat pump, it is good practice for plumbers to also issue a certificate of compliance on any other plumbing work done. So, make sure you insist on a PIRB Certificate of Compliance whenever you make use of a plumber.

Make sure before you employ a plumber that he will be able to provide you with a PIRB Certificate of Compliance personally. Any plumber who hints that he will “get a certificate” for you, is most likely not registered and you are bound for a plumbing disaster.

How can I verify that a plumber is PIRB registered?

PIRB keeps a detailed updated register of all PIRB registered plumbers. So, if you are in doubt whether a plumber is registered, you can contact PIRB directly to confirm. Contact details are at the end of this article.

How is the integrity of the plumbing industry kept intact?

PIRB has designated officers who conduct random checks on plumbing jobs carried out by its members. This ensures that PIRB registered plumbers are held accountable and that the industry standard remains uncompromised.

In the unlikely event that any PIRB registered plumber executes sub standard work, a consumer can raise a complaint to PIRB who will take the matter further.
