When Cyril Ramaphosa was first announced as the President of South Africa back in 2018, many locals celebrated. The hope for many was that the African National Congress (ANC) leader would use his impressive business skills to “fix” South Africa’s economy.
Years later, the smiles have faded from those once hopeful faces. Many disenchanted locals continue to express their angst toward the current administration and the country’s various socio and economic woes.
Naturally, many fingers have been pointed at Ramaphosa. This week, a video of a woman reduced to tears after meeting him went viral. Many in the comment section shared how meeting the President is nothing to be proud of.
Don’t cry for me, South Africa
President Cyril Ramaphosa’s appoint in 2018 brought with it a fresh wave of hope for South Africans who yearned for a better life.
A couple of years later, load shedding, high rates of unemployment and rising crime stats burst that bubble for many.
Naturally, many have blamed the country’s President for failing to turn things around for his citizens.
This week, it became clear just how much people loathe Ramaphosa after a video of a woman crying for him was blasted by local X (formerly Twitter) users.
In fact, many described the video as an “ick.” Take a look below:
Real South Africans on Ramaphosa as a leader
A few locals took the opportunity to share their thoughts on the President and did not have many kind words to say.
Unhappy, unsatisfied and fed up are just some of the words which can be used to describe their feelings.
53-year-old mom-of-four Desiree Sewell had this to say:
“Since he came into power load shedding has worsened. Crime statistics are higher. Land grabbing has become a problem and the promises of building houses for the impoverished have remained just that – promises.
“Infrastructure has suffered tremendously. Policing not adequate to service communities as crime increases. Squatter camps, people invading land, crime has increased as these people are unemployed and resort to crime.
“No new schools are being built, meaning bigger classes while teachers struggle to teach classes of up to 50 learners per class. Public buildings, like municipal offices, are not maintained. Not enough doctors and medical staff, sick people are laying in corridors, women are giving birth in the most inhumane way ever.”
While local entrepreneur Sage Gordon complained about a lack of support for up and coming businesses around local communities:
“Ramaphosa has no sense of what’s happening on the ground disappointing all state organs and not checking what’s happening in South Africa. Furthermore, he is a businessman in an economy that has failed to provide government interventions that assist business and entrepreneurship in South Africa.”
