You don’t often hear of someone using a fake payslip in South Africa to buy a vehicle. Never mind one worth R1.2 million. Nevertheless, that’s what a Polokwane man is alleged to have done in his attempt to swindle a dealership out of a Ford Ranger Raptor.

According iReport South Africa, following his arrest earlier in the week, the man was released on R8 000 bail in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court. A bail figure that’s a mere drop in the ocean compared to the value of the bakkie.

Manong Tshehla (24) from Polokwane, allegedly used a counterfeit bank statement and fake payslip to secure financing for the Ford Ranger Raptor. This occurred back in April 2023, shortly after the new Raptor, which accelerates to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds, went on sale in South Africa.

Colonel Matimba Maluleke of the Limpopo Hawks explained that the bogus application was processed and Tshehla did indeed take delivery of the R1.2 million bakkie. However, a thorough investigation by the Limpopo Hawks saw the accused arrested on Monday 2 January 2024.

MISSED REPAYMENTS

There is no information as yet on how the fraud was committed. However, we can only assume Tshehla began missing his monthly repayments. These would’ve been in the region R22 000 for such an expensive bakkie. The accused is set to reappear in court on Friday 2 February 2023, where details surrounding the case should come to light.
