What happens if you’ve picked up someone’s SASSA card, and want to return it to the rightful owner? Here’s where to hand it in.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is the government agency that’s in charge of issuing social grants to South Africans, including the R350-SRD Grant, the Childcare Grant, the Disability Grant, and the Veterans Grant.

But what happens if you’ve picked up someone’s SASSA card, and want to return it to the rightful owner?

Sometimes bank cards get lost or left behind, but never reunited with their owners because the person who found it isn’t sure what to do with it.

Lost SASSA cards can be handed in by SAPS

If you have found a lost SASSA card (or anything carrying someone’s personal details), it can be handed in to your nearest police station.

South African Police Services (SAPS) is in charge of serving and protecting the country, but they can also be the legal entity to which lost personal information can be left for the rightful owner.

A lost social grant card can also be reported to the South African Social Security Agency, who can then act accordingly.

If you’ve found someone else’s social grant card, you aren’t allowed to keep it – but instead, can approach SAPS or SASSA.

Replacing a lost SASSA card

A lost social grant card can be returned to the rightful owner, but what if you are the person who needs their card replaced?

Lost cards can be replaced by first cancelling the card that was lost, and then applying for another through the social grant agency.

SASSA cards for 2024

Social grant cards will remain valid for 2024, despite previous announcements that grant cards might expire in December last year. If you receive your social grant to your bank account, there’s no need to renew or replace your card – unless it is lost or stolen.
