A mere two weeks ago, Khaya Mthethwa and Ntando Kunene celebrated their second wedding anniversary – and now they are heading for Splitsville.

Kunene, who was crowned Miss SA in 2016, has released a statement on her social media accounts on Tuesday, revealing that she and her husband of two years – Idols SA 2012 winner, gospel singer and television host, Mthethwa – have decided to split amicably. The couple has a one-year-old son.

The statement comes as a surprise with the couple having celebrated their wedding anniversary less than two weeks ago. Mthethwa still posted a snap of their star-studded traditional wedding celebration on his Instagram, writing that it’s “been an amazing two years” together.

Whirlwind romance and divorce

The Mkhulumsebenzi singer famously asked for Kunene’s hand in marriage after a whirlwind romance that spanned three months of dating. Their Swati- and Zulu-themed wedding ceremony took place at Kunene’s home in Piet Retief, Mpumalanga, and was attended by a slew of famous faces, including music mogul Lindelani Mkhize and the late Akhumzile Jezile.

In the statement, Kunene, who had moved to Durban to support her husband’s church activities, said she and Mthethwa had discussions around their marriage and felt it was in their best interest to get a divorce.

“In the last few days, my husband and I have had in-depth discussions about our marriage and our young family challenges,” she said.

“On Sunday, we met my in-laws and informed them of our mutual decision for us to amicably file for divorce. I also informed my mother and the rest of my Kunene family who were disappointed with the divorce decision, but appreciated the fact that I represented them well at the Mthethwas.”

No comment from Khaya Mthethwa

Mthethwa, who was the first black person to win Idols SA, has not made any comments about the split. Kunene added that their being married out of community of property meant they would keep their respective assets.

She had already moved out of their family home and was back at her parent’s house in Mpumalanga with their son of whom she will have custody.

“I have decided not to ask the court for child maintenance as I believe Khaya as a father and myself as a mother have a duty towards the welfare of our son to educate and raise him to become a respectful, ambitious and, importantly, a responsible boy, then a man that we shall be proud of.”
