It’s been a chaotic week for the South African Social Security Agency, but help is at hand with the SASSA SRD Grant app. Yes, after news that SASSA Gold Cards would definitely expire on 31 December 2023, to a 180-degree turnaround saying the cards will be valid indefinitely, now you can add a smartphone app into the mix.

According to SASSA Grants, it’s called MoyaApp and is available for download at the Google App store and iOS App store.

A potential problem with a SASSA SRD Grant app in South Africa is the simple fact that upwards of 65% of the population don’t have smartphones. Nevertheless, what would be the appeal of a SASSA SRD Grant app?

According to SASSA Grants, it’s free (as in it doesn’t use any data) and it’s an all-in-one super app. Many grant recipients use the app each month for various services, including to check when their R350 grant will be paid, as well as data-free messaging and content services.

Undoubtedly, the top use for MoyaApp is to check your SRD Grant status. But the data-free text messaging and group chats are a useful addition. This in addition to:
- Date-free voice and video calling.
- MoyaPlay (games with cash prizes).
- MoyaQuiz (play, learn and win money).
- MoyaRewards (earn money rewards from shopping).
- MoyaPay money account.
- MoyaPay prepaid Mastercard.
WHAT ABOUT OTHER CONTENT SERVICES?
Yes, the SASSA SRD Grant app offers those, too, 300 of them to be precise. The content services include quick access to:
- Weather, news, sport, games, shopping, entertainment, gossip, jobs, education, books, health, tech & science, religion. Not all are data-free.
- Internet browsing.
- A marketplace for bus tickets, health vouchers, accommodation, classified listings, insurance, and financial services.
- Load-shedding updates.
- You’ll be able to buy airtime and data, prepaid vouchers, send money to bank accounts, deposit and withdraw money.

To use the SASSA SRD Grant app, you will have to participate in market research surveys. And SASSA has stressed that the MoyaApp is not the property of the South African Social Security Agency. However it does have more than 10 million downloads, 175 000 reviews, with an average of 4.1 stars, so it’s clearly well used already.
