Eat in for under R200: Best grocery specials at South Africa’s supermarkets

We’ve rounded up all the best dinner ideas from our local supermarkets. Draw inspiration from Checkers, Spar, Pick ‘n Pay and Woolworths this week.

Turning mealtime into a gourmet feast will be a breeze with these deals. And it’s so much healthier than ordering takeout.

Checkers

Quinoa-coated chicken fillets – R169.99

Checkers has 21 mouth-watering meal kits this week, and the one that caught our eye was the quinoa-coated chicken fillets with roasted beetroot, butternut and pumpkin seed salad. The box comes with a recipe card, alternatively, either scan the QR code on the box, or watch the instructional video.

If chicken is not what you had in mind this week, consider trying their Greek lamb chops on a bed of roasted tomatoes and butter beans, or the home-style lamb biryani with basmati rice and tomato, cucumber and mint salsa. Both are a bit pricier but look oh so delicious.

Woolworths

Roast chicken pie and veggies – under R200

Woolies’ roast chicken pie is on special this week. The 1 kg pie sells for R139.99. The dish is made with shredded roast chicken in a creamy sauce with a crisp shortcrust pastry.

Serve with a crisp green salad or bread. Alternatively, add a portion of creamed spinach for R42.00, or the pumpkin fritters, on special for only R54.99.

Pick ‘n Pay

Potjiekos for under for under R160.

With Pick ‘n Pay’s beef potjiekos (bone-in) selling for only R64.99 per kg, there’s no reason not to treat the family with a traditional potjiekos feast this week.

Remember to add onions, potatoes, carrots, baby marrows and green beans to your trolley as well. Those are on special too: grab any two from only R21.00 each.

Alternatively, buy butternut, corn on the cob, cabbage and peas for this beef potjiekos recipe from Pick ‘n Pay. This recipe is perfect for the weekend, when you have a few hours to spare.

Spar

Boerewors in a blanket for under R140.00

With Spar’s bulk Kalahari boerewors selling for only R79.99 per kilo this week, there’s no reason why you cannot treat the family. Try something different with Spar’s Boerewors in a blanket recipe.

For this recipe, remember to add a can of tomato onion mix, cake flour, baking powder and cheese to your trolley.

Boerewors in a blanket

Ingredients

• 500 g boerewors
• ½ a 410 g can tomato onion mix
• 250 ml fresh milk
• 120 g (250 ml) cake flour
• 100 g (250 ml) grated cheddar cheese
• 1 large egg
• 5 ml mixed dried herbs
• 2 ml salt
• 5 ml baking powder

Method

• Preheat oven to 180 ºC.
• Brown the boerewors in a frying pan over moderate heat, without cutting it (keep in the spiral shape it came packed in. Add the tomato onion mix and heat through. Transfer into a pie dish.
• In a bowl, mix the remaining ingredients to make a batter resembling pancake mixture. Pour over evenly to cover the boerewors. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes.
• Serve with steamed vegetables.
