When it comes to your favourite comfort food to order in, burgers are often on the menu. However, you can make much better burgers at much les cost at home. Also, making your own burger lets everybody add their preferred toppings. This burger with avocado salsa and chips is one of those fully-loaded meals that you wouldn’t believe came out of your own kitchen. It’s great for weeknights at home or even big parties over the weekend.

Burger with avocado salsa and chips tips

The beef patty is easy to put together and if you want even patties, weigh the lot and then divide into separate portions to roll into balls (about 100-150g each). The avocado salsa is similar to guacamole and if you want the best results, add some lemon juice and if you’re storing it, cover with plastic wrap that’s pressed against the mixture. Everybody also knows that for the best burgers, make sure to toast the inside of the burger buns with some butter. You can also pop the chips into the air fryer instead of shallow frying in oil.

Ingredients

  • Burger patty
  • 1⁄2 small onion that is chopped finely

  • 750 g lean minced steak

  • 25 g breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg that is beaten

  • vegetable oil for frying

  • salt and pepper for seasoning

  • For the avocado salsa
  • 1 tbsp lime or lemon juice

  • 2 tbsp sweet chili sauce

  • 1⁄2 small red onion that is finely chopped

  • 1 avocado

  • For the chips
  • 500 g potatoes

  • 15 g vegetable oil

Method

  • Take the onion, breadcrumbs, eggs, mince and some seasoning and mix them into a bowl until they are thoroughly combined. This can be done with hands or a spoon.
  • Separate the mixture into four sections and roll each portion into a ball. The portions should be flattened into burger shapes that are about 2.5cm thick.
  • The potatoes should be sliced into 1cm slices, then sliced these into 1cm wide chips. Place the sliced potatoes into a strainer or bowl and rinse in cold water. Then place the rinsed potatoes into a pot of cold water, and boil them for 5-10 minutes. These should be then drained and dried thoroughly with a cloth or paper towel.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a fryer or deep saucepan. Place the potatoes into the oil and deep fry them until golden brown. This can take about eight minutes.
  • Mix the lime or lemon juice, chili sauce, and onion into a bowl to make the salsa. The avocado should be finely chopped and mixed into the chili sauce mixture.
  • Take a heavy-based frying pan and brush it with oil. The beef patties should be fried in the pan for five to six minutes on each side until cooked thoroughly.
  • The beef patties can be placed on burger buns with ingredients such as cheese, tomatoes and lettuce.
  • Once the burgers, salsa and potato chips are prepared, serve and enjoy.
