Everyone loves a classic spaghetti bolognaise. Its the perfect weeknight dinner and one that always makes the kids happy.

But sometimes you just feel like something different. Why not make meatballs instead with a lovely tomato sauce. Making your own pasta sauce is definitely worth it. Click here for our favourite pizza sauce recipe which works well with pasta too.

A good meatball should be packed with flavor and tender throughout. Although the process can be a labor of love, making them from scratch is really easy. Here is how to make perfect meatballs every time.

Total time

  • 500 grams ground beef

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1 egg

  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped

  • 2 cups pasta sauce, see recipe below or use your favourite ready made pasta sauce.

  • 1 chopped onion

  • 1 teaspoon garlic

  • 1 can tomato paste

  • 2 cans tinned tomato

  • 1 teaspoon Italian herbs

  • 2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

  • fresh basil

  • salt and pepper to taste

  • In a small bowl, stir bread crumbs with milk until evenly combined. Let sit 10 minutes, or while you prep other ingredients.
  • In a large bowl, use your hands to combine beef, onion and garlic. Season with salt and pepper, then gently stir in bread crumb mixture, egg, Parmesan, and parsley until just combined. Form into golf size balls.
  • In a large frying pan, heat the oil. Working in batches, sear meatballs on all sides to develop a crust.
  • Once the meatballs are cooked, remove from the pan and then make your sauce. If you are using ready made sauce, heat the sauce in a pan and add meatballs.
  • In a large saucepan over medium heat, saute onion and garlic in olive oil until onion is translucent.
  • Stir in tomatoes, salt, sugar and herbs.
  • Reduce heat to low, and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir in tomato paste, basil, pepper and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Add meatballs to your sauce and simmer 10 minutes more. Serve with your favourite pasta.
