Saucy spaghetti and meatballs tips

If you don’t have bread crumbs to add to the meatballs, crushed Korn Flakes work even better as they are lighter than bread and so, the meatballs are less dense. The tomato sauce is simple and simmering the meatballs in them infuse the balls with the sauce. Not only is it super tasty, but you can have your Lady and the Tramp moment if you really want to. This recipe also shows off your cooking skills when you want to impress your date.

Ingredients

  • 500 g ground beef

  • 1⁄2 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1 egg

  • 1⁄2 cup Parmesan cheese

  • 1⁄2 tsp salt

  • 1⁄4 tsp pepper

  • 1⁄4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped

  • 2 cups pasta sauce, see recipe below or use your favourite ready made pasta sauce.

  • For the pasta sauce
  • 1 chopped onion

  • 1 tsp garlic

  • 1 can tomato paste

  • 2 cans tinned tomato

  • 1 tsp Italian herbs

  • 2 tsp salt

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • fresh basil

  • salt and pepper to taste

Method

  • In a small bowl, stir bread crumbs with milk until evenly combined. Let sit 10 minutes, or while you prep other ingredients.
  • In a large bowl, use your hands to combine beef, onion and garlic. Season with salt and pepper, then gently stir in bread crumb mixture, egg, Parmesan, and parsley until just combined. Form into golf size balls.
  • In a large frying pan, heat the oil. Working in batches, sear meatballs on all sides to develop a crust.
  • Once the meatballs are cooked, remove from the pan and then make your sauce. If you are using ready made sauce, heat the sauce in a pan and add meatballs.
  • For the pasta sauce
  • In a large saucepan over medium heat, saute onion and garlic in olive oil until onion is translucent.
  • Stir in tomatoes, salt, sugar and herbs.
  • Reduce heat to low, and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir in tomato paste, basil, pepper and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Add meatballs to your sauce and simmer 20 minutes more. Serve with your favourite pasta.
