Making pizza at home, you can control exactly what goes into and on top of your pizza. One of the most important pieces is the sauce and this homemade pizza sauce recipe will provide you with the best base ever. With true Italian flavours and a bit of time, you’ve got a great pizza party on your hands.

It is a rich, thick sauce that is super satisfying to spread but remember, you don’t want too much sauce as it can make the pizza soggy. When making your pizza us a preheated oven, for at least 45 minutes as high as your oven will go so that the pizza cooks quickly and the base doesn’t get soggy. Using a heated pizza stone in your oven makes a very big difference unless you’re lucky enough to have an actual pizza oven. The sauce can be used in so many other dishes as well, such as Chicken Parmesan, a bread stick dipping sauce, and pasta.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • splash of olive oil

  • 2 onions, chopped

  • 1 clove garlic, crushed

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp oregano powder

  • 1 tsp basil, sweet basil will work too

  • 2 tsp italian herbs

  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes

  • 2 tsp salt

  • 1 1⁄2 tsp pepper

  • 1 can italian tomatoes

  • 2 tsp tomato paste

  • 2 tbsp sugar

  • 125 g parmesan cheese

Method

  • In a medium saucepan, heat oil and butter. Add onions and garlic and simmer till golden and soft.
  • Add all the spices and tomato paste. Stir well.
  • Add the tin tomatoes and sugar and simmer for 15 minutes. Stir frequently.
  • Add the parmesan cheese and simmer on a low heat for another 15 minutes.

Notes

  • This recipe makes enough sauce for 2 – 3 large pizza’s and can be stored in a sealed container for 2 weeks. You can freeze this sauce for up to two months
  • To freeze: Allow the sauce to cool, pour into a freezer bag and store until needed. When needed simple thaw out the bag in hot water and reheat the sauce.
