Warm-up this winter with a traditional peach pudding. This toothsome recipe will warm your soul and body and satisfy anyone with a persistent sweet tooth.

There is something so comforting about a traditional, baked peach pudding coming straight from the oven and steaming with flavour. This recipe from Aunt Maggie in Windhoek is a must-try and will soon become a family favourite after trying it once.

Perfect to serve after your Sunday meal as a special surprise for the family. Within one hour you can have this tasty warm dessert ready.

When the pudding comes hot from the oven, spread the sauce over it so that it can infuse properly with the pudding and make yourself ready for the ultimate sweet bite.

This peach pudding can be served hot or cold, but bearing in mind the season we are in, we all will opt for the warm option. Serve with creamy custard in front of a crackling fire. This bowl of comfort will not disappoint.

  • 1 egg

  • ½ cup sugar

  • 1 cup cake flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup milk

  • 3  tablespoons butter

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence

  • 1 tin peaches 410 g (more or less)

  • 2 tablespoons sugar

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon.

  • Sauce
  • 1 cup peach juice from the tin

  • 1 tablespoon Maizena (cornstarch)

  • ½ cup sugar (optional)

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

  • 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind

  • salt to taste


  • Heat the oven to 180°C.
  • As for the pudding not to stick you need to grease the oven dish with butter.
  • Beat the egg and sugar until light van fluffy.
  • Sift the flour, salt and baking powder into the egg mixture.
  • Warm the milk in a saucepan with butter. Add the vanilla essence and pour over the egg, sugar and flour mixture and mix carefully.
  • Add the mixture into your prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  • Open the can of peaches and drain in a bowl.
  • Place the peaches one by one in a row on top of the mixture.
  • Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.
  • When the oven is ready, bake the pudding for 30 minutes.
  • Sauce
  • Mix the peach juice and maizena well and bring to boil. Let it boil for about 2 minutes and remove from the stove.
  • Add the butter, lemon juice and rind.
  • Spread this sauce on the warm pudding. Let it rest.
  • Serve cold or warm with custard.
