Everything that tastes good tastes like chicken, or so the saying goes. There are so many flavours to add to the most versatile poultry and you can combine sweet and savoury flavours to make something delicious. This honey BBQ chicken recipe is simple for weeknight cooking as well as for the weekend braai. The recipe is so easy that you can even smoke this chicken if you have the facilities.

Honey BBQ chicken suggestions

For the most even cooking, flatten or butterfly the chicken so that everything cooks at the same time. You can even use ready-made pieces of chicken. Get a bit of vegetables into the roasting pan if you want to. If you do, make sure that you add more stock and maybe keep some of the sauce on the side. You can cook it on the BBQ if you can close the lid on it and adjust cooking time. Serve with your roasted vegetables and some crispy potatoes.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken, butterflied (or chicken pieces

  • 80 ml vinager

  • 80 ml honey

  • 5 ml dry mustard

  • 10 ml butter

  • 1 packet brown onion soup

  • salt and black pepper

Method

  • Blend all of the sauce ingredients thoghoughly and pour over the chicken in a roasting pan.
  • To butterfly a chicken, cut out the back bone and wishbone. Press down hard and flatten.
  • Cook in a 180°C, basting frequently with the sauce in the pan until cooked and browned.
  • Allow 20 minutes per ½ kg plus 20 minutes over.
