Spoil the kids at home with this appetising hamburger and chips recipe. We have also included a zesty salsa for the ultimate taste experience.

With the schools closed for at least the next two weeks, many parents are scratching their heads on how to keep their children occupied. Especially with the cold weather keeping us all inside.  

With this tasty hamburger and chips recipe, you can at least put a smile on their faces with a favourite meal. And the best part is that you do not have to leave the comfort of your home as you can prepare it right in your kitchen. No takeout needed!

These hamburger patties are made from scratch with lean beef mincemeat. With this recipe, you do not run the risk to end up with beef patties falling apart. And instead of buying ready-cut chips, why not use potatoes and cut them into chips?

This easy hamburger and chips recipe comes together in less than an hour. Enjoy!

  • Burger patties
  • ½ small ½ onion, chopped finely

  • 750 g 750 lean minced steak

  • 25 g 25 breadcrumbs

  • 1 1 egg, beaten

  • vegetable oil for frying

  • salt and pepper to taste

  • Salsa
  • 1 tablespoon 1 lime or lemon juice

  • 2 tablespoons 2 sweet chilli sauce

  • ½ small ½ red onion, finely chopped

  • 1 1 avocado

  • Chips
  • 500 g 500 potatoes

  • 15 g 15 vegetable oil


  • Hamburger patties
  • Take the onion, breadcrumbs, eggs, mince and some seasoning and mix them into a bowl until they are thoroughly combined. This can be done with hands or a spoon.
  • Separate the mixture into four sections and roll each portion into a ball. The portions should be flattened into burger shapes that are about 2.5 cm thick.
  • Take a heavy-based frying pan and brush it with oil. The beef patties should be fried in the pan for five to six minutes on each side until cooked thoroughly.
  • The beef patties can be placed on buns to make a burger and other ingredients such as cheese, tomatoes and lettuce may be added.
  • Chips
  • The potatoes should be sliced into 1cm slices, then sliced into 1cm wide chips. Place the sliced potatoes into a strainer or bowl and rinse in cold water. Then place the rinsed potatoes into a pot of cold water, and boil them for three to four minutes. These should be then drained and dried thoroughly with a cloth or paper towel.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a fryer or deep saucepan. Place the potatoes into the oil and deep fry them until golden brown. This can take about eight minutes.
  • Salsa
  • Mix the lime or lemon juice, chilli sauce, and onion into a bowl to make the salsa.
  • The avocado should be finely chopped and mixed into the chilli sauce mixture.
  • Once the burgers, salsa and potato chips are prepared, serve and enjoy.
