Any weekend plans? Saturday nights are for pizza and movies with the family. An all-time favourite in most households is the well-known Hawaiian pizza.

It is the perfect combination of sweet and savoury flavours loaded on top of a crispy crust. Delicious melty mozzarella cheese locks in layers of salty bacon or ham and juicy pineapple pieces in each slice.

If you have the time and love experimenting with recipes in your kitchen, you will be happy to know that this recipe also includes a homemade pizza dough recipe.

Tips when preparing Hawaiian pizza

If you like to add larger quantities of the toppings than suggested in this recipe, you can do so. However, be careful not to overload the pizza as you might end up with a soggy pizza.

When cutting the pineapple for the pizza, pat them dry to avoid excessive moisture on your pizza.

This tasty pizza will certainly hit the spot and become a weekly favourite with the family.

Ingredients

  • homemade pizza dough

  • ½ cup pizza sauce – (plus more as needed)

  • 1½ to 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

  • ½ cup diced bacon or ham- (plus more to taste)

  • ½ cup fresh diced pineapple thoroughly patted dry – (plus more to taste)

  • dried oregano to taste

  • Melted garlic butter (for brushing)
  • 3 tablespoons 3 melted unsalted butter

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano

  • salt to taste

  • Homemade pizza dough (or use store-bought)
  • 2⅓ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 packet 1 instant yeast (2¼ teaspoons)

  • 2 teaspoons 2 sugar

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

  • 2 tablespoons 2 olive oil plus additional for brushing the dough

  • ¾ cup warm water

Method

  • If making your own pizza dough you will follow your own recipe and know how long you have to prepare it. You can also use store-bought dough.
  • Make sure your oven is preheated at 360°C.
  • After you have brushed the dough with olive oil and pricked it with a fork, add the toppings. Start with pizza sauce, then the cheese, bacon/ham, pineapple, and oregano. You can adjust the topping quantities, but don’t overfill it, as this can make the pizza soggy. Important: Thoroughly pat dry the pineapples before adding them in order to prevent excess moisture.
  • Make the melted butter by combining the melted butter with garlic powder, oregano, and salt. Brush the borders with melted garlic butter.
  • Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until bubbly and the edges are golden brown. Cut into 8 slices and serve.
