ABOUT PATEK PHILIPPE

Patek Philippe was founded by Antoine Norbert de Patek and François Czapek in 1839. The high-end Swiss brand is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world. In 1868 they created the first-ever Swiss wristwatch for the Countess Koscowicz of Hungary.

Since then, the brand has released several watch collections. From pocket watches to watches with split-second chronographs and from watches with perpetual calendars to the first all-electronic clock.

The likes of Albert Einstein, Queen Victoria and Princess Diana have all owned a Patek Philippe watch.

More recently, hip-hop mogul Jay-Z, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cardi B and Migos member Offset, have all worn the watch.

PATEK PHILIPPE IN POP CULTURE

Several hip-hop stars have rapped about the luxury Swiss watch brand in their music. According to Genius, one-third of the songs on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2017 mentioned Patek Phillipe. Beyoncé, Future, Young Thug, Migos and Cardi B have all mentioned the brand in their songs.

Speaking to CNN Style, Nick Marino, the senior vice president of watch magazine, Hodinkee said because it is one of the most prestigious watch brands in the world, Patek Phillipe would always stand out as something “everyone was talking about”.

“Rappers are smart. They know what status means and they know what exclusivity means. You might expect rappers to talk about Richard Mille, because that’s a young, flashy, ‘new money’ watch brand – and rappers love that one too – but I love that they love the old money watch brands.”

The Patek Philippe watch also came out to play at the Super Bowl game on Sunday 13 February. One of the world’s best basketball players, LeBron James, showed off the timepiece while at the NFL final. James wore the limited edition Tiffany Blue Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 which is worth over $6.5 million (R98 million).

Hip-hop mogul Jay-Z and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres also rocked the watch.
