Earth Day is celebrated annually on 22 April to mark the anniversary of the “birth of the modern environmental movement”. This year, to make the occasion extra special for Mzansi, Cape Town’s deputy mayor, Eddie Andrews, is encouraging Cape Town residents to visit the Mother City’s stunning nature reserves at no cost.

Rondebosch Common is one of the few nature reserves you can visit for free to celebrate Earth Day. According to their website, it is one of the most popular urban green spaces for recreation and more than 80 bird species have been recorded there. There is also wildlife including frogs and non-venomous snakes, and tortoises.
Here are a few other nature reserves in the Southern Suburbs you can visit
The Table Bay Nature Reserve is a seven-part reserve that offers a freshwater lake, wildlife and birds. Nature lovers can expect to see a few porcupines, frogs, lizards, snakes and fish in the freshwater lake.

If you’re in the mood for a picnic, then Wolfgat Nature Reserve is for you! Other activities include fishing and paragliding, but due to safety reasons, these activities must be done in groups.
“The reserve is named after the brown hyena or strandwolf (Hyaenabrunnea), which occurred in Cape Town around the 1840s,” says the city of Cape Town.
