Years before the controversial group, Die Antwoord, was the global success they are today, Ninja and Yolandi were just humans.

Believe it or not, but they were once just like you and I. This is a realisation that Paul Almeida-Seele, a Facebook user, was met with when he revisited his past on #ThrowbackThursday.

On a Facebook post, he introduced an old picture of a person who looks like Ninja. Except, Paul referred to him as Watkin Tudor-Jones, a tall, pale-looking awkward guy standing rigidly in front of a microphone.

“Just found this gem in my archive. This is Watkin Tudor-Jones back when he was just a middle-class nerd and long before he rebranded himself and his back-story to become Ninja in Die Antwoord.

“24th September 2004 at the Roswell Kings’ album launch party. Those were good times.” he wrote.

Ninja from Die Antwoord: Then and now

This is a far cry from the Ninja we know today. The same guy who gave Eminem a cheeky response to his diss just a month ago.

The Ninja we know is laced with symbolic tattoos and piercings and we have come to expect a cuss word at the close of every sentence he utters.

But Watkin? It can’t be. He looked harmless and afraid of… life. People who were zapped by Paul back to that night commented on the post, recalling their encounter with Ninja.

“That’s awesome! I asked him to MC the gig and he was super happy to. [He] and I did a song together called ‘Don’t Lose the Magic’. What a trip to see this shot. Thank you, brother!” Andy Lund wrote.

We are not too sure what happened since then; how a calm man turned into the edgy, electrifying performer that he is today.
