With the world slowly transitioning to how it was before the national lockdown brought upon by the Covid-19 pandemic as we witnessed families losing their loved ones in numbers, instead of enjoying a new dawn the entertainment industry was surrounded by a dark cloud as most of their notable talents in music, film, and media met their untimely death.

What makes these deaths shocking is the nature of death, it was either suicide, gun death, died in their sleep or a sudden illness. The month of February was the worst when the country lost three of the industry greats in a month.

CELEBRITY DEATHS OF 2022 – IN MEMORIAM

  1. Patric Shai – January 

As we were still getting used to life without lockdown restrictions, the death of the veteran actor sent shock waves across the entertainment industry and the country. Shai died by suicide at his home in Dobsonville, he was 65 years old. 

2. Nomakula Roberts – February 

Two weeks after Shai’s death seasoned journalist Kuli Roberts sudden death shocked the nation, just when she was grateful for all the changes in her life since the year started. Roberts collapsed in Kyalami, North of Johannesburg, and never woke up. She was 49 years old. 

3. Sandile β€˜Dj Citi Lyts’ Mkhize – February 

He was the younger brother of the late hip-hop legend ProKid, known for his humility and lifting Soweto hip-hop. The young talent’s life was cut short when he was gunned down in Soweto on Valentine’s Day. His death raised concerns about gun possession in South Africa. He died at the age of 34.

4. Rikhado β€˜Riky Rick’ Makhado – February

With so many losses in February and advocacy talks on social media about mental health since the death of Shai, Riky Rick lost his battle with depression at the age of 34. The Boss Zonke hitmaker died by suicide and his last tweet read, “I’ll come back a stronger man. This land is still my home.”

5. Boitumelo Athiel β€˜Dj Dimplez’ Mooi – March

The DJ behind many South African hip-hop hits such as Riky Rick’s Amantombazane Remix and Way Up died from a sudden brain hemorrhage at the age of 30.

6. Deborah Fraser – May

The award-winning Gospel singer sent a shock to the Gospel fraternity when her death was announced. She died at the age of 56 after battling a short illness, before she died Fraser was wheelchair-bound.

7. Jamie Bartlett – May

Infamous for his role as David Genaro on etv’s Rhythm City, the legendary actor was in good health the night before his death, snapping with the likes of Somizi Mhlongo. At the age of 55, an autopsy revealed that he died of cardiac arrest.

8. Busisiwe Lurayi – July

The How To Ruin Christmas actress left the nation shocked when her body was reportedly found with visible bruises and bleeding from the mouth. She met her untimely death at the age of 36.

9. Pearl Shongwe – November 

Newsreader and presenter on the popular radio and television show The Touchdown, Shongwe passed away in her sleep at the age of 35. 

10, Oupa John β€˜DJ Sumbody’ Sefoka – November 

Businessman and Ampiano artist left the entertainment industry in shock and Cassper Nyovest devastated after he was killed in a drive-by shooting in Woodmead, Sandton at the age of 46.
