The crocheted scarf that broke

Earlier this year the organisation, 67 Blankets for Mandela Day set about to break the Guinness World Record for the longest crocheted scarf by a team.

The team set up to break the record at the Nelson Mandela capture site in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal at the end of July.

According to Herald Live, they set a target of 27km – signifying the number of years Madiba was imprisoned – but exceeded that, reaching 29.17km.

And then in August this year, they were officially named as the Guinness World Record holder for the longest crocheted scarf.

“The longest crocheted scarf measures 29.17 km (95, 725 ft),” states the official site for Guinness World Records.

The organisation broke the previous record of 14.089km set up by Mother India’s Crochet Queens‚ a women empowerment organisation.

67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day founder Carolyn Steyn said this was the perfect year to pull if off. She told Herald Live:  “We are South Africans‚ we love a challenge and we know we can beat India in the Wool Cup because this is Mandela’s centenary year. Why not pay tribute to him in this way?”

Steyn posted the challenge to Facebook after which crafters across the country started to crochet scarves. They even had participants from India‚ UK‚ Australia and the United States.

In the end, thousands of people crocheted scarves to the exacting standards of the Guinness World Book criteria of 20x200cm per scarf.

After their mission was complete, the scarves were returned to their provinces of origin and distributed to the poor.
