Meal kits this week: Asian beef and sesame seed salad for R119.99

Checkers uses only the best locally-sourced ingredients for the meal kits and promise “perfectly proportioned meals” without the effort, every time.

Chicken pasta pesto for R170.00

Over at Woollies, they have all the trimmings for the perfect chicken pasta pesto, simply get a packet of free-range skinless chicken mini breast fillets for R67.99 along with 500g penne pasta for R15.12 and a pack of black olives for R18.99.

Don’t forget to add grated hard cheese to your basket, 60g costs R34.95, and sun-dried tomato stir-through pasta sauce was marked down from R40.34 to R32.99.

A healthy vegetarian supper

Meanwhile, at Pick ‘n Pay, four brinjals will only cost you R39.98, so why not try these brinjal boats with spicy chickpeas for a meat-free mid-week supper?

You’ll also need an onion, two tomatoes, two cans of chickpeas, low-fat plain yoghurt, curry paste and an assortment of spices. Serve with naan bread or rice.

Pork Chops with Blueberry Chutney

Have some guests over and prepare this delectable dish. Preparation time is only 10 minutes for an 8-serving meal.

Recipe from Spar’s website:


Pork Chops

  • 8 pork chops
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 Tbsp (30ml) SPAR Olive Oil
  • 2 Tbsp (30ml) Harissa paste
  • Juice and rind of a lemon

Chutney, enough for one cup:

  • ½ cup (125 ml) red wine vinegar
  • ½ cup (125 ml) SPAR Sugar
  • 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) fresh ginger, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) lemon rind
  • A pinch of cayenne pepper
  • A pinch of salt
  • 3 cups blueberries, fresh or frozen


Pork Chops

  1. Mix the olive oil, harissa paste, lemon rind and juice and rub onto the chops. Season well with salt and pepper
  2. Cook in a non-stick pan over a high heat or on the braai for 6 minutes on a side or until cooked through.
  3. Serve with a generous portion of chutney and a lovely side salad.

Blueberry Chutney

  1. Combine the vinegar, sugar, onion, ginger, cinnamon, lemon, pepper and salt in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes.
  2. Add 1 cup of blueberries.
  3. Simmer for 20 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the remaining 2 cups of blueberries and simmer for another 10 minutes.
