Comedian Mpho ‘Popps’ Modikoane once again takes centre stage as the host of the much-anticipated 11th Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards.

Popps, known for his ceaseless work ethic as he always seems to be moving from one major project to another, is embracing this new venture while reflecting on the growth surrounding the comedy scene in South Africa.

“Much like our country, our comedy infrastructure was a bit on the edge there for a while, so everyone’s had to pull their weight to rebuild the framework of comedy,” he remarked.

“South Africa’s much the same; we all need to do our bit to drive our country forward, and as SA gives us comedians so much material daily, we thought it high time that we affectionately gave back to it in our own, endearing but comedically brutal way,” he said, still commenting on the comeback for South Africa’s comedy scene.

Popps won’t be flying solo for this project.

His appearance, along with three other comedy geniuses-Celeste Ntuli, Khanyisa Bunu, and Robby Collins at the 11th edition of Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards, themed ‘You Think You Know South Africa,’ promises an entertaining blend of awards and humour at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City on April 13.

A night of non-stop laughter and pure comedic brilliance is to be expected as the winners in each of the twelve categories will have five minutes for stand-up comedy instead of just delivering acceptance speeches.

Kayla Hendricks, the Senior Brand Manager at Savanna Premium Cider (their partner since 2012), remarked on the uniqueness of the event, saying, “This year’s theme resonates with the ethos of Savanna Premium Cider. Just like the Comedians who will be celebrated at the Awards, Savanna uses humour to offer a crisp, witty perspective on what’s happening around us.”

Adding to the hype, Comedy Central is on board as the official TV partner for the first time, ready to air a Special showcasing highlights a few weeks post-event. Starting from R195, tickets are now on sale for this year’s Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards.
