Will Kaizer Chiefs release underperforming striker?

Kaizer Chiefs may well be willing to bid farewell to one of their ‘foreign’ players after a disappointing stint at the club to date.

Last August it was confirmed that Colombian striker Jasond Gonzalez would be joining Kaizer Chiefs from Bolivian side Real Santa Cruz.

After weeks of speculation about this possible signing, Chiefs were confident they had found the perfect player to bolster their forwards department.

However, since arriving at the club, Gonzalez has battled to make much of an impression, only starting in four games this season. He has also made eight appearances as a substitute, but the 24-year-old has not contributed a single goal or an assist.

According to Goal.com, Chiefs are not interested in looking into permanently acquiring the services of the striker after his loan ends in June.

In another interview, current coach Cavin Johson was also non-committal when talking about the player’s future.

“You must leave that for the management to ask them. Some players, especially South Americans, take a little bit longer than others to get to know the feel of the PSL or the feel of South African football.”

WHO IS KAIZER CHIEFS’ GONZALEZ?

Gonzalez was born in Arboletes, Colombia in 1999, and he plays as a centre-forward and stands at 1.89 meter tall.

The lanky striker started his development at Atletico Nacional before moving to San Lorenzo where he was promoted in 2020.

Upon his promotion, Gonzalez was loaned out to Argentine clubs All Boys for his first taste of professional football.

Gonzalez would later move to Colombia to join Real Santa Cruz, where he netted eight goals in 16 matches last season.

WHEN DO AMAKHOSI PLAY NEXT?

It seems unlikely that Gonzalez will receive enough game-time over the next few weeks to earn a contract renewal.

Chiefs are currently preparing for a big test against current champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Thursday night at FNB Stadium.

Chiefs currently occupy eighth spot on the league standings, having garnered 33 points from 25 matches.

“The players are in a very good space after getting a good result, and more importantly, putting in a good performance against SuperSport,” Johnson commented. “We face another Tshwane team in our home stadium in front of our amazing supporters, and we are preparing to take Sundowns ‘to the wire’.

“As the home team, it is incumbent on us to give a good account of ourselves and go all out to get the three points.”
