HOW THE FUNNY CHEF GOT FIRED

The comedienne and actress The Funny Chef, who was announced as host of OPW (Our Perfect Wedding) in February 2022 revealed in an interview of Popcorn and Cheese with Mpho Popps and Robot Boii that she was fired for not speaking isiZulu.

Viewers of the show did not take kindly to the news of how she lost her job on the show and her departure sparked tribalism in the entertainment industry.

Tlokana added in the interview that she tried to save her job by speaking isiZulu, especially when she was working at weddings in KwaZulu-Natal.

“Then I get a call saying – ‘We are going to let you go. Thank you very much for contributing’. Then, the hate started coming up.”

“My mom was worried that I was going to [kill] myself. They told me viewers are not happy, and if they are not happy, the channel is not going to be happy. Which was fair. I just didn’t expect it so soon because I was trying.”

Our Perfect Wedding replaced the actress with former Real Housewives of Durban reality TV star LaConco.

@Nthati tweeted: “They fired her, then got Laconco who only knows Zulu?”

OPW VIEWERS REACT TO HER EXIT

@KhopeYeKholo: “The Funny Chef was fired from Our Perfect Wedding because she can’t speak Zulu. The show hosts different tribes and races. Why would they want someone to speak a certain language in a show like that. That’s triabalism because that show is not for Zulu people only but every South African.”

@Princy Mofokeng: “Tribalism e mo? Whuu Mara Mazulu mara sies mahn.” (This is tribalism, but Zulu’s)

@SicebiNdwandwe: “When it comes to South Africa’s entertainment industry, IsiZulu is what English is to the world.”

@TellyMosia: “They should have indicated that IsiZulu is one of the prerequisite unlike embarrassing her like that mxm.”

@momo: “But they hired her knowing that she can’t speak isiZulu.”
