In 2021 some of Nkuna’s malls were severely damaged in the unrest that rocked South Africa, which started in KwaZulu-Natal and flared to Gauteng, hitting Soweto and Mamelodi the hardest. The damaged malls included the Bara Mall, Protea Glen Mall and Jabulani Mall.
Speaking to the media, Nkuna once revealed that before Jabulani Mall was destroyed, it was worth about R1.4 billion, whilst Protea Glen Mall was R700 million.
