South African social media users were overjoyed when the country’s home team Banyana Banyana beat Italy 3-2 in yesterday’s FIFA Women’s World Cup game. Thousands of them flocked to Twitter to congratulate the team for creating a magical moment in history. What they did not expect to see was a tweet coming directly from a verified account of late struggle hero Nelson Mandela.

A tweet was made from the former president’s account also congratulating the team. This resulted in locals cracking hilarious jokes about Madiba tweeting from his grave.

Nelson Mandela congratulates Banyana Banyana, leaves SA spooked

Many South Africans couldn’t contain their excitement after Banyana Banyana’s victory yesterday.

The soccer team managed to beat Italy in yesterday’s World Cup match and scored themselves another step closer to winning the cup.

In light of this, thousands of locals headed online to share congratulatory messages with the team. The Nelson Mandela foundation account also took the time to do the same.

“Well done team! You have made us proud. Good luck with your second-round match against the Netherlands on Sunday,” the tweet read.

While many are aware that the account is being ran by a social media manager for the Nelson Mandela foundation, this didn’t stop them from cracking jokes about Mandela ‘tweeting from heaven”.

“Nah y’all @Banyana_Banyana woke Tata Madiba up with that win,” one person hilariously wrote.

Another person commented, “Hawu izinja madoda, uvukile Rolihlahla? Banyana Banyana is performing miracles fake pastors can only dream of, levels kwedini.”

“From Banyana Banyana progressing to the world cup knockout stages for the first time, to Danny Jordaan slander and now Madiba is tweeting from heaven. Aay! Today has been a great day on Twitter Fokof! Man,” a third person added.
