Gomora star and musician Thembi Seete, who is part of Boom Shaka, opens up about their Metro FM Award.

Thembi Seete tells Sowetan that Boom Shaka’s performance, which also includes group members Theo Nhlengethwa and Junior Sokhela, was reminiscent of some of their ’90s performances with the late Lebo Mathosa.

The awards, which were held in Mpumalanga saw the kwaito music group take centre-stage and performed some of their classic hits. The iconic music group received a Lifetime Achievement Award.

“Our performance was mainly to remind people about our childhood and how good we had it. The performance was also to remember the legacy of Lebo and all she contributed in the South African music industry. We couldn’t have been happier to remind people of the good old times over 30 years ago.”

Their reunion was in honour of the county’s 30-year democracy celebrated on Saturday. She also tells the publication that it’s important to never forget this day.

The 2024 Metro FM Music Awards were held on Freedom Day (27 April) at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga.

The awards were hosted by Tebogo “Proverb” Thekisho and Luthando “LootLove” Shosha and broadcast live on SABC 1 and SABC+.

The Metro FM Awards are supported by the Mpumalanga Provincial Government in association with the Motsepe Foundation.

Metro FM business manager Kina Nhlengethwa describes the awards as “a platform where artists, both established and emerging, showcase their passion and talent, igniting a symphony of inspiration and creativity.”

“Beyond the glitz and glamour, these awards embody the relentless pursuit of excellence and the unwavering dedication to craft.”

Sowetan reports that Makhadzi won the Best Female Artist Award, Mthandazo Gatya won Best R&B, and Legacy walked away with the Best Duo/Group.

DJ Oskido walked away with the Lifetime Achievement Award, while Oscar Mbo walked away with the Best Styled.
