Spriingboks star player Willie le Roux explained where his nickname ‘Majaivane’ came from. Willie was one of the veteran players when the Springboks lifted their fourth Rugby World Cup trophy in 2023.

Over the [past few years, the Springboks squad has been full of entertainers like Siya Kolisi and Trevor Nyakane. Speaking of Siya, his love for singing along to Makazoli Mapimpi has been exceptional ever since.

Besides singing, the Springboks squad had other characters like Trevor Nyakane, who loved to dance so much. Trevor’s dance after defeating the All Blacks in the final remains one of his best showings.

When he was still a younger player, Willie revealed that he was everywhere in the dressing room and training. He showed all this when speaking to Supersport, briefly explaining where his nickname came from.

After the interviewer asked him, he was surprised they knew the nickname but still explained it.

“l think it means dancer, so l got that nickname from when l was playing at the Cheetahs,” Willie said. “Back in the day when l was a lot younger, and yeah, l was goosing, stepping, and just dancing around on the field all the time, and it worked out then,” he explained.

“But l am a bit older now, but l still have that same day”, he continued.

He finished, promising to do it again if the chance allowed him.

A few weeks ago, Jesse Kriel explained his dream Springboks band, and it highlighted why some players like Willie le Roux got such nicknames in rugby. Indeed, when it comes to the Springboks, it’s all dancing, singing and playing when not on the field.

Even though he left some players, Kriel detailed the unique characters of players like Eben Etzebeth, Siya Kolisi, Willie le Roux and Trevor Nyakane. Showing how much Willie le Roux was nicknamed Majaivane, his Springboks teammate Jesse Kriel named him band manager.

All this tells us how much Willie would be all over dancing and doing lots of entertainment.
