‘R500k’: Mawhoo’s ‘girlfriend allowance’ divides SA

Over the years, South Africans have been sceptical about girlfriend allowances, but celebrities like Mawhoo have often been vocal about the topic.
The bubbly singer set social media abuzz against the backdrop of her recent interview on LTido Podcast.
MAWHOO REVEALS HER GIRLFRIEND ALLOWANCE
Since her thrust into the limelight, she has managed to keep her private life under wraps, leaving many to guess even about her boyfriend. However, during her podcast session, Mawhoo dived into her private life, from relationship woes to her alleged girlfriend allowance.
Mawhoo has it that most of her boyfriends splurge thousands on her and is not moved by small amounts since she earns a fortune from her booming career. She has it that she gets around R500 000 in most of her relationships as a ‘girlfriend allowance.’
However, her claims have received a backlash, with many taking a swipe at her for lying. Mzansi was more than convinced she wouldn’t settle for odd gigs if she received such amounts.
DO MEN PAY SUCH HUGE AMOUNTS AS GF ALLOWANCES?
Some X users even likened her to Cyan Boujee, who has often trended thanks to her alleged boyfriend allowances. While on Podcast and Chill with MacG, Cyan Boujee once revealed that she received R50 000 from her boyfriend weekly as an allowance.
However, the amount would translate to R200 000 a month. After all, girlfriend allowances have become a global trend that Mawhoo and other SA celebrities haven’t been spared from.
While speaking on Cocktail Hour with Boity, Mihlali Ndamase revealed that she once received R50 000 as an allowance. Ndamase said, “I once had a girlfriend allowance, and shame it was cute. He used to give me R50k a month.”
On the other hand, Boity made it known that R450 000 was doable to her. Boity said, “If you give me R450k per month, I won’t bother you[sic].”

However, apart from Mawhoo’s controversial girlfriend allowance, the singer also talked about her relationship with Hlubi Nkosi. She confirmed her relationship with Londie London’s ex.
The two sparked dating rumours in June 2023. However, Mawhoo made it known that they have since called it quits. Little is known about the reasons behind their fallout.
