South African social media users were shocked to learn that Oscar Pistorius has been granted early release from prison. Earlier today, a parole board made the decision to release the ex-olympic from prison in January next year after spending 10 years behind bars for the murder of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on 14 February 2013.

The former Paralympic champion shot Reeva multiple times through a bathroom door and later claimed during his highly televised trial that he mistook her for a burglar.

Just a few weeks before her murder, Reeva had texted Oscar explaining that he scared her sometimes.

She also expressed how often she was forced to walk on eggshells around him out of fear that he would lash out at her.

“I do everything to make u happy and to not say anything to rock the boat with u. I’m scared of u sometimes and how u snap at me and of how u will react to me,” reads one particularly worrisome message.

In light of his parole, many locals have revisited the case. One app user shared a screenshot of the message which was sent to Oscar by Reeva and left other app users reeling.

In the comment section many app users expressed sadness for Reeva who was clearly facing a lot of emotional abuse during the short lived relationship with Oscar.

They also slammed the parole board for granting him parole.

“Ya neh… Not even 10yrs? How’s this justice? How’s this a deterrent to wanna be murderers? South African justice favours perpetrators over their victims! Second chance my foot what about the victims family,” said one fan while another wrote:

“This is a deliberate destruction just so we shift our focus on money manipulation… The money manipulation thing is very serious it affected people’s livelihoods..it’s serious than anything we experienced as a country besides covid”
