Former Orlando Pirates star bags acting role in new telenovela

The former Orlando Pirates star is et to make his acting debut when the new telenovela premieres Mzansi Magic.

Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo is venturing into acting. The retired footballer is one of the cast members in the new Mzansi Magic telenovela, Champions.

The thrilling series – which premieres on Monday, 5 February, at 19:00 – promises passion, power, perseverance and triumph set in the high-stakes soccer world.

EX-ORLANDO PIRATES GOALKEEPER BRIGHTON MHLONGO NOW AN ACTOR

Mhlongo, who is also a former Bidvest Wits goalkeeper, takes on the character of a retired footballer and owner of a soccer club.

The former goalkeeper will be acting alongside heavyweights including Sello Maake ka-Ncube, Tumisho Masha, Jo-anne Reyneke, Kgomotso Christopher, Kwenzo Ngcobo and Thembinkosi Mthembu.

Sne Modise (played by Reyneke) is a symbol of resilience and ambition in a male-dominated football empire. Battling the storm caused by sudden changes in her father, Washington’s life, Sne is thrown into a series of challenges involving love and betrayal. While battling the intense drama, as the underdog, she stands at the top, determined to challenge the gender norms and lead the Soshanguve Giants FC to success

Champions also features Ntobeko Mathebula as the formidable soccer player Ricky, and versatile actor Thabo Malema as Lebo’s uncle, Lesibane.

The show promises a star-studded lineup of cameo appearances, which include Supersport sportscasters Thato Moeng and Lwazi Ziqubu.

Additionally, retired Orlando Pirates star and pundit Phumudzo Manenzhe will make an appearance.

BROADCASTING GIG

Mhlongo hung up his boots in 2021 after a freak accident at training, which resulted in an eye injury.

Last year, the 33-year-old joined e.tv’s The Morning Show, where he presents the sports section of the programme. The lifestyle and news show is broadcast simultaneously on e.tv and eNCA.
