Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali has expressed his disappointment after the national soccer team lost to Ivory Coast in the Afcon final on Sunday, 11 February.

The goalkeeper – who also plays for South African club Chippa United – issued an apology to his country on his X account.

NWABALI SORRY TO NIGERIA SOCCER SUPPORTERS

On Tuesday, 13 February, Stanley Nwabali shared his disappointment at losing the Afcon title just days earlier.

He tweeted: “A disappointing and frustrating end. I deeply apologise to Nigerians. I was once a fan, still a fan and I understand how it feels giving you a disappointing night. We take full responsibility.

He added: “Thanks for the whole support till the end. I love you all.”

While Nwabali was sad at not winning the Afcon title, he didn’t feel the same about the goalkeeper of the tournament award, which was given to Bafana Bafana’s Ronwen Williams.

He said in a post-match interview: “Ronwen Williams is a good goalkeeper, to be honest. It’s not a loss to me with him winning [the goalkeeper of the tournament award]. He deserves it.

“Competing with this kind of guy and getting a chance to win the goalkeeper of the tournament. I wish him well, and I give him credit.”

HOW MUCH DID HE EARN AT AFCON?

While Nigeria may have lost out on the Afcon title, they can console themselves with the $4 million (R75 million) prize money as runners-up.

According to Sports Brief, Nwabali will also return to earning $10,000 (R189 000)  a month at his club Chippa United.
