The family of the late 33-year-old Katlego Bereng who was found dead in Thabo Bester’s burnt cell following his elaborate escape on 3 May 2022 from the G4S Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein is reportedly preparing to sue the state, SABC recently reported.

RIP KATLEGO BERENG: FAMILY PLANS TO SUE THE STATE

Katlego Bereng’s body was used as a stand-in corpse during Thabo Bester’s audacious prison escape from cell 35 at the Mangaung Correctional Centre. According to The Citizen, the autopsy is said to have showed that Bereng died due to blunt force trauma to the head. The autopsy reportedly indicated that Bereng was already dead before Bester’s cell caught fire. It’s also said that paraffin was found in Bereng’s trachea when he was set alight.

Bereng’s funeral was held at the Lesley Monnanyane hall in Rocklands, Bloemfontein on 7 May 2023. According to the publication, Bereng’s father, Batho Mpholo is preparing to take legal action against the state.

“We sat down as a family and said let’s gather information, let’s include lawyers. So, we are busy gathering information. So as soon as we have enough evidence… which we still have information that suggests that something was not done right,” Mpholo was quoted as saying.

“We are still in the process of taking legal action against G4S [and] against the Department of Health… We believe so far we have enough evidence that there is a foul play,” Bereng’s father was quoted as saying.
