Slain rapper AKA – real name Kiernan Jarryd Forbes was shot and killed outside Wish restaurant in Durban on 10 February 2023 – Saturday will mark a year since the rapper was assassinated in public. The Economic Freedom Fighter President Julius Malema has recently questioned why the rapper’s murder case has not been solved.

In March last year, Bheki Cele assured the public that police were working diligently to solve AKA’s murder investigation. He has since shared some information regarding the case, however, almost a year since the rapper was killed, no arrests have been made. This also comes after AKA’s assassination was caught on CCTV.

In September 2023, The South African reported that Cele revealed that the police had found the gun and getaway cars used in the successful plot to take out the rapper. Several cell phones from suspects were also said to have been confiscated by the police, Cele updated the public.

In December last year, IOL reported that Cele shed more light on the rapper’s case. He was quoted as saying: “They [the police handling AKA’s case] have found two people that I know for sure know very well what happened on that particular day [when AKA was killed]…We know who we are chasing… I get briefed every day about this matter. It is a matter that we can’t get to rest. And unfortunately, we can’t be giving a blow-by-blow of what is happening, but the progress is absolutely there.”

The EFF leader Julius Malema is seemingly not convinced the police are working fast enough to solve AKA’s murder case. In a recently posted video as seen on social media, the EFF president questioned why the police had not found the rapper’s killer even after being captured in the act by the CCTV.

“We found the bullet; we found the car,” Malema said imitating Cele’s previous updates. “Sendzeni [What must we do with that]?” the politician asked. “What must we do with that kind of information?” Malema continued.

“Bheki Cele just calls a press conference [and comes] with a big hat to come and tell us [that] he knows the car and the gun. We are not interested in that. We are interested in that boy who pulled the trigger in front of a camera, killing a high-profile person,” Malema said.

“A high-profile person got killed in front of a camera and the whole world watched [and] till today we have not arrested those people,” the EFF leader continued.
