South Africa’s biggest sports super fan, Joy “Mama Joy” Chauke is back in the country and she’s already facing questions about how she can afford all her trips!

As thousands gathered at OR Tambo International Airport to welcome back the victorious Springboks on Tuesday 31 October, there was another high-profile name scheduled to arrive on the same flight. Mama Joy, who is widely renowned as South Africa’s biggest sports fan, was also on the Emirates flight which brought our double Rugby World Champions home.

Whether it’s rugby, football, cricket, or even athletics, Mama Joy can usually be seen in the crowd cheering on her beloved country. After spending a month in Australia and New Zealand to support Banyana Banyana, Mama Joy spent another month away from home cheering on the Springboks to victory.

While many admire her dedication to supporting South African sports, others have been asking: “Where does she get the funds from?”

Fresh from landing, Mama Joy appeared on Robert Marawa’s Marawa Sports Worldwide, on radio station 947. She shared her experience of the World Cup from engaging with the players to becoming a global icon. However, Marawa turned up the heat when he pointed out that many onlookers are wondering how she manages to afford to support South African teams across the world.

She replied and said, “As long as I’m there, I don’t care who paid for me or whatever. Whether it was the president or whoever, but I just wanted to be at the World Cup. The thing is, if you’re doing something, people will talk. If you’re doing nothing, they have nothing to talk about”

Among the many teams and sports she supports, Mama Joy is also a huge Royal AM fan – the Premier Soccer League club owned by Shauwn Mkhize (AKA Mamkhize). Robert then quizzed if the multimillionaire could have been the one bankrolling some of her trips.

Chauke admitted she’s close with Mamkhize, and explained that she even called the Durban-based businesswoman to join her to some games. Robert Marawa then chimed in, “And then she deposited the money?” to which the sports fanatic replied, “No. [Laughs] People are going to say ‘you chowed Mamkhize’s money’ I don’t know what to say! I’m a Royal AM supporter and she will follow me and check in on me. I don’t get paid by her for what I do, I do it for the love of the game”.

During their interview, the outspoken Chauke also revealed that although she had just landed in South Africa, she hinted that she would be willing to jet off to India to support the Proteas. The South African men’s cricket team are currently competing in the Cricket World Cup.

When Marawa asked Mama Joy if India might be her next destination, she coyly replied, “If I can be there, I will be there. If anyone on the timeline helps me to get there, Mama Joy will be in India. I could even leave tonight!”

Somehow, it wouldn’t be a complete surprise to see her in the crowd when the Proteas next take to the crease!
