Former Kaizer Chiefs player Valery Nahayo has apologised for a “joke” mocking Itumeleng Khune’s suspension from the club for allegedly being intoxicated during training.

Over the weekend, the Burundian-born player left several shady comments under the goalkeeper’s Instagram post.

Last week, Amakhosi announced that Itu had been suspended and stripped of his captaincy after allegedly reporting to training while under the influence of alcohol. He has been advised to seek professional help.

On Sunday, 17 December, Valery Nahayo courted controversy after he joked about Khune’s suspension.

Under an Instagram post, he commented: “Bro, can we have a drink before training tomorrow?” The player added a beer and laughing-face emoji to his comment.

Naturally, many fans of Itu were not impressed and clapped back at the mean-spirited comment.

Initially, Nahayo defensive of his comments. Responding to one follower who accused him of being “jealous” of Khune, the foreign player responded: “Jealous of what?”.

He added: “The price of the expensive drink you think I cannot afford, I use that money to buy toys for my boy to play with. The I drink cheap beer”.

However, the defender has since apologised after he was inundated with criticism.

Deleting his original comments, he issued an apology to Khune. He posted: “Hey mate sorry for my joke, I didn’t expect it to be a big deal as it is,
but I do understand the reaction of people.

He continued: “Maybe they thought I had a problem with you as teammate. Not knowing I used to make jokes out of everything with everyone. Maybe this was the wrong timing to joke”.
