The South African Zionist Federation has petitioned to reinstate ousted U19 cricket captain David Teeger ahead of the Cricket World Cup. And thousands have already signed it…

The teenage athlete was “relieved” by Cricket South Africa last week in a move to reduce the “risk of conflict or violence” amongst protestors at the tournament.

Teeger – a Jew – made headlines last year over his pro-Israeli views.

PETITION TO REINSTATE DAVID TEEGER GAINS MOMENTUM

Since its announcement, CSA has been criticised – and commended – by political parties for its stance. It’s also seen a divide among cricket fans who’ve expressed mixed views over its decision.

On the X platform, many outraged tweeps have been sharing an online petition issued by the SA Zionist Federation.

The petition is titled: “We demand reinstatement of David Teeger’s U19 Captaincy and Apology.”

In it, the body strongly objects to CSA’s controversial ruling.

It stated: “This decision, ostensibly based on concerns of “violence” and “safety” linked to the Israel-Gaza conflict and Mr. Teeger’s personal views, is deeply concerning. It is, without doubt, a blatant act of antisemitism: targeting and singling out an individual due to his Jewish religion and personal beliefs in breach of the South African Constitution.

“The action taken by CSA not only undermines the principles of equality and fairness but also sets a dangerous precedent in the world of sports, where merit and talent should be the main criteria for selection and leadership roles.”

The petition demanded an apology and a “transparent explanation from CSA regarding the real motives behind this decision.

It continued: “We stand in solidarity with David Teeger and all athletes who face discrimination. We affirm our commitment to the fight against antisemitism and all forms of bigotry in sports and society.

“Let this petition serve as a reminder of our collective responsibility to uphold the principles of fairness and equality, ensuring that no athlete is ever penalised for their race, religion, or personal beliefs.”

To date, the petition has been signed by over 25,000 people. See details of the petition here.

WHAT DID CRICKETER SAY ABOUT THE ISRAELI-PALESTINE CONFLICT?

David Teeger made headlines late last year after his acceptance speech at the Absa Jewish Achiever Rising Star Awards.

He said: “Yes, I’ve been (given) this award, and, yes, I’m now the Rising Star, but the true rising stars are the young soldiers in Israel.”

Teeger’s comments were met with backlash from the public and pro-Palestine activists. However, he insisted that he made them in his personal capacity.

The 19-year-old was also cleared by an independent inquiry – instructed by CSA -which ruled that his comments did not contravene any codes of conduct.
