SPRINGBOKS SING THEIR HEARTS OUT

A video shared by Boks hooker Mbongeni “Bongi” Mbonambi, on his Instagram, shows the 2023 Rugby World Cup champions singing some of their favourite amagwijo (Xhosa war cries or traditional songs) whilst in their bus.

The Springboks etched their names into the annals of rugby history by becoming the first team to ever win the coveted Webb Ellis Cup four times. This is after the Bokke beat the All Blacks 12-11 in the final.

Last week, a World Rugby investigation found insufficient evidence to launch disciplinary proceedings against Mbonambi after Curry (England’s flanker) had told referee Ben O’Keeffe that the Boks hooker had called him a “white c—” during England’s semi-final defeat. England escalated the matter to World Rugby and further alleged that Curry had been the victim of racial abuse from the Springbok star during a match in November 2022.

When the allegations were made, South Africans argued that the hooker was speaking Afrikaans and said “wit kant” – which translates to “white side” – indicating the colour England were playing in on the day. Others argued that he could have said “wyd kant” which means “wide side”. The Springboks often speak Afrikaans to hide their strategies and plans from opponents.
