ANC MP Sylvia Lucas – who claimed that “load shedding is not the end of the world,” has issued a lukewarm apology for her comments earlier this week.

The former Northern Cape premier had South Africans riled up when she insinuated that power cuts were not a big deal during a parliamentary debate.

However, Lucas has since claimed that she is also “a victim of load shedding.” The politician added that she’s also had to purchase an R18 000 inverter with her “own money.”

‘I’M ALSO A VICTIM OF LOAD SHEDDING’

On Tuesday, 13 February, Sylvia Lucas had Mzansi breathing fire when she exclaimed that “load shedding is not the end of the world.”

Addressing parliament, the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) deputy chair spoke on the debate following last week’s State Of The Nation speech by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Speaking in Afrikaans, Lucas accused Eskom of trying to “sabotage” the president.

“We must look into that”, she added.

After her comments made headlines, Sylvia Lucas claimed her words were taken “out of context.” She also “apologised” to the country.

She told SAFM: “If that is the case, I would really want to apologise to the nation if I came across as someone who is insensitive.”

Lucas added: “I’m also a victim of load shedding….My own household is suffering.

“People are saying that she probably has emergency measures… the only thing that I bought with my own money is inverter. It’s just for my fridge and for my children so that they can watch TV and charge our devices.

“It’s not something I’m exempt from.”

Sylvia Lucas told The Citizen that her inverter cost R18 500 and was purchased with her “own money”.

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa has defended Sylvia Lucas from her comment that “load shedding is not the end of the world.”

According to EWN, he claimed that the ANC MP’s words were “misunderstood”.

He said: “I don’t think she meant it to mean accept load shedding because that’s what it is. I think what she meant was, yes, we have a number of other challenges, and load shedding is one of them.”
