After winning the Best Actress award at the South African FIlm and Television Awards (SAFTAS) earlier this year, Kim Engelbrecht has scored an International Emmy nomination for Reyka. The series will also fly high in the Best Drama Series category.

Reyka is also the first African drama series to be nominated in more than 10 years. South African series Home Affairs and Sokhulu and Partners were nominated in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

The series follows criminal profiler Reyka Gama (played by Kim Engelbrecht) as she investigates a string of murders in the KwaZulu-Natal sugar cane fields.

Kim Engelbrecht, who has made a name for herself in the international entertainment industry, says her International nomination means so much to her.

“This serves as validation to our entire Reyka team that hard work and commitment does not go unnoticed. Congratulations Team Reyka,” said the 42-year-old actress.

“I saw a quote this morning: ‘You can get to where you want to go from exactly where you are’. Thank you to the International Emmys for the incredible nomination. Thank you for the opportunity to share our show with the world. South Africa has so many stories to tell.”

In August, Reyka walked away with four SAFTAs, scoring awards for Directing, Cinematography, TV Drama, Best Actor, Editing and Make-Up and Skyline.

In an exclusive interview with The South African, Engelbrecht said she has received a few scripts for upcoming projects, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

“I think with the pandemic, you become a lot more patient with yourself and the trajectory of your career so I’m kind of patient, but I’m always ready,” she said.
