‘Existential crisis’: Elon Musk admits to contemplating suicide at 12

South African-born billionaire Elon Musk admitted to contemplating suicide at the tender age of 12 in an interview at the DealBook Summit 2023 with New York Times’  Aaron Ross Sorkin.

ELON MUSK CONTEMPLATED SUICIDE AT 12

Pretoria-born billionaire Elon Mus revealed that he had an “existential crisis” and thought about suicide at the age of 12. He made the bombshell revelation at the DealBook Summit 2023 with New York Times’  Aaron Ross Sorkin.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO said that he once asked himself “it is all pointless? Why not just commit suicide? Why exist?” He went on to explain that he would read German philosophy books at the time which made him “quite depressed”. Therefore, he advised teens not to read those books.

However, he felt that The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, written by Douglas Adams, he realised that the meaning of life is not a simple answer but which questions we should be asking.

“My motivation then was, well, my life is really finite … but if we can expand the scope and scale of consciousness then we are better able to figure out what questions to ask about the answer that is the universe and maybe we can find out what is the meaning of life,” he said.

THE BILLIONAIRE: ‘IT WAS AMPLIFIED BY A DIFFICUKT STORM’

The billionaire also said that his mind “often feels like a very wild storm” because he has a “fountain of ideas” running through it at all times. Musk then clarified that it was not a “happy storm.” He then revealed that he feels he was born that way, but the feelings were amplified by a “difficult childhood.”

“I think to some degree I was born this way, but it was amplified by a difficult childhood, frankly,” he added.
