A 47-year-old primary school teacher from North West has been remanded in custody for the alleged rape of two minors.

The teacher appeared in the Wolmaransstad Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 17 May.

TEACHER APPEARS IN COURT FOR ALLEGED RAPE

The South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in the North West, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani, said the teacher was arrested on Thursday, 16 May, at Leeudoringstad. The mother and the principal of the two minors, aged 12 and 14, registered cases at the local police station on Tuesday, 14 May.

Funani said it is alleged that the teacher would ask the two minors to help him carry books or go and fetch something at his office, where he performed sexual acts.

“He was arrested at the school on Thursday, 16 May. The accused was remanded in custody until Tuesday, 21 May, for a formal bail application.”

Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, condemned the incident.

Kwena said it was sad that the victims were allegedly abused by someone who was supposed to protect them.

TWO TEENS IMPREGNATED BY ALLEGED RAPIST

In 2022, a 26-year-old teacher also appeared in the Mount Ayliff Magistrate’s Court in Eastern Cape. He was arrested for the alleged rape of two minors.

The alleged rapist teacher was employed at Ntsizwa High School in the Eastern Cape at the time where both victims are enrolled.

The accused reportedly forced himself on the grade 12 learners in the school’s strong room on multiple occasions.

“He would allegedly lure the victims to the strong room, lock it from the inside, overpower them, rape them, and threaten them if they told anyone,” said National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Luxulo Tyali.

Tyali said the victims told their classmates after the alleged rapes. However, the suspect was only arrested after the two informed their parents and they both discovered they were pregnant.
