Prince Harry and Meghan Markle lost 700 000 social media followers in one year, while Prince William and Kate Middleton’s follower count keeps growing, a new report has revealed.

A look at Prince Harry and Meghan’s Instagram followers

According to an exclusive report by The Sun, UK data analysis firm Hypeauditor has shown that 700 000 people unfollowed Harry and Meghan’s Instagram account over the past year. The couple obtained a massive following when their account was launched, but have not been active ever since they stepped down as senior members of the royal family in January 2020.

The royal family’s social media presence

Figures obtained by The Sun also revealed just 66% of the Sussexes’ 10.1 million Instagram followers are thought to be people. Some three million are likely bots that “mass follow” big-name accounts, according to data from analysts.

William and Kate now have 13 million followers on Instagram, while Queen Elizabeth’s @theroyalfamily account gained 1.3 million in the last year.

Why the switch?

“They tell people to be compassionate yet neither are compassionate towards their own families,” royal author Angela Levin said of Harry and Meghan according to the publication. “They complain of climate change and tell us to be green, yet they then hop on private jets. People are clearly deciding they don’t agree with their behaviour and are switching off.”

A special YouTube channel

After launching their official YouTube channel in May 2021, sources close to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said that the couple is focused on their digital efforts, and have worked hard to build a successful social media campaign which has seen them amass millions of followers around the globe.

William and Kate are the only royals to have their own YouTube channel independently of the Royal Family’s own channel.
