Ukhozi FM presenter and singer Bingelela Mpanza has opened up after a traumatising ordeal which saw her and a friend being kidnapped and robbed on Saturday, 4 February, at midnight.

According to Daily Sun, the radio personality was on her way to the SABC radio studios in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, when incident took place.

Bingelela hosts a Sunday morning show called Sekuntwela Ezansi between 03:00 and 06:00 on the IsiZulu radio station.

Speaking to the publication, the Isibingelelo hitmaker said that they were kidnapped and robbed at a robot behind Moses Mabhida Stadium.

“I was in the company of my friend when the incident happened. I’d asked him to accompany me to work since it was already late at night. We were five minutes away from work and we stopped at the robot, just behind Moses Mabhida Stadium,” the UKhozi FM presenter said.

While they were waiting for the robot to turn green, two armed men approached them.

“They fired shots in the air, I guess this was to scare us. They held us at gunpoint and forcefully removed us from our car. They handcuffed us before taking us into their car. Then they took us to the bush, one of them drove our car to an unknown place,” said Bingelela.

She said that they could not tell where they were because they were not allowed to look out the window.

The two criminals took them into a small room and threatened to kill them should they not co-operate.

“We were scared because they kept shoving us with their guns. We cried and begged them to take whatever they want but not kill us,” she added.

Bingelela — who won Ukhozi FM’s Winnie Mahlangu female presenter search competition in 2021 — said that after two other men arrived, R45 000 was stolen from their bank accounts.

“So there were four of them. One of them who appeared to be much older was keeping an eye on us. The other three were busy with our cellphones, they transferred R30 000 from my friend’s bank account and R15 000 from my bank account,” she recalled.

She added that after five hours the armed men dumped them on the N2 on Queen Nandi Drive.

“They took our cellphones and our car was found on Sunday morning in the Umlazi area, south of Durban. On Sunday morning I opened a case of kidnapping and hijacking at Durban Central Police Station,” said Bingelela.

Police said no arrests have been made.
