South Africans have united on social media to defend Springboks hooker Bongi Mbonambi since England’s Tom Curry accused him of a racial slur. They’ve also thanked the English rugby player for uniting the country.

@neil_jrm wrote: “Nelson Mandela and Tom Curry. Unifiers of RSA. Did not expect to be writing that line..”

While @shepherdmg said: “I was thinking the same, he’s done more for racial harmony than Mandela and Johnny Clegg combined.”

@moses11555271: “They thought that we don’t care for each other on this side, yes we’re fighting but when an outsider tries to attack one of our family members, we take a break from family war.”

South African lawyer @ZacMoselane said on Wednesday that the English media is used to bullying people around and they didn’t know about South African Twitter/social media.

“Oh boy, those podcast boys should have warned them. Tom Curry is now crying abuse. He can end this now by coming out and apologise. But he is arrogant, so he won’t,” added Moselane.

Daily Mail reported on Wednesday that the South Africa rugby stars spoke in Afrikaans during training this week and appeared to make light of Bongi Mbonambi’s ‘white ****’ England slur row as they warm up for the World Cup finals.

“A video of South African stars seemingly mocking the incident has gone viral,” added the publication.

The video by Hendrik Cronje showed the South African players and the coaching staff using the Afrikaans phrase “watter kant” which translates to “which side”.
