Mgarimbe – the artist who produced Sister Bethina, otherwise known as South Africa’s “unofficial national anthem” – has done it again with another hit song. And this time, it’s dedicated to the Springboks.

But after performing the upbeat track at SA’s match against Argentina, rugby fans are not so sure it passes the vibe check.

The song – titled Amabokoboko or Sister Bokina – was commissioned by SA Rugby for the national team ahead of the Rugby World Cup. The tournament takes place between 8 September and 28 October.

During the halftime break, Mgarimbe performed his new track dedicated to the Springboks.

The song – a remix of Sister Bethina, aptly retitled Sister Bokina – was first heard on 947’s Anele and The Club breakfast show earlier this week.

The hitmaker put on a robust song performance, which named-dropped players like Siya Kolisi, Cheslin Kolbe, and SA Rugby director Rassie Erasmus.

But unlike earlier this week, fans were not feeling the live performance. On Twitter, many viewers berated the track and the artist.

@KBKanobie: “That song for the Springboks World Cup will not take off. No flow and absolutely no tune. Could have come up with something better.”

@Steven32286675: “Please get rid of that shocking World Cup song.”

@andyhamms: “I blame that new song and halftime show for the Boks’ dreadful second half!”

@kurt_myCT: “Sorry, but this World Cup song for the Springboks is utter rubbish!”

‘SIYA WENT CRAZY WHEN HE HEARD IT’

While many South Africans were not impressed with Mgarimbe’s new musical offering, Springboks captain Siya Kolisi and the rest of the team have given it a thumbs up.

Amabokoboko comes 17 years after the hitmaker released his massive track Sister Bethina.

According to Mgarimbe, the national team “remix” was recorded in just 30 minutes.
