South African musician Dr Malinga — real name Doctor Goodwill Malinga — has touched the hearts of many fans who have decided to support him financially following his candid and emotional interview about his battle with SARS (South African Revenue Service).

The Via Orlando hitmaker broke down during his interview with MacG and Sol Phenduka on Podcast and Chill on Thursday 08 September when he recalled how his assets were auctioned off in July this year as part of his R2.1 million tax bill.

DR MALINGA ON HIS BATTLE WITH SARS

Last month, Malinga topped the trends list when news about the taxman actioning off his assets to pay off his tax bill broke.

Speaking to MacG and Sol, the singer and producer revealed that after the Durban July in 2019, he paid R1 million of his R2.1 million debt. Thereafter, he would pay whatever amount he could.

But, unfortunately for him, the COVID-19 pandemic hit which played a huge role in his financial woes as gigs ran dry.

“In music, you depend on being called for your service,” he said, adding that he tried to reach out for help.

“After two years, SARS came. I called Minister Nathi Mthethwa, we talked. I was calling people that I worked with, but they didn’t come to my rescue,” he said.

According to Scolla, he was stripped of his furniture, music equipment and a bakkie — a combined total of R500 000 worth of movable assets.

“They took everything. When you enter my house, if you don’t have a heart, you will laugh. My house is empty,” he said in the interview.

When asked how much he owes, he revealed that he owes R500 000.

DR MALING BREAKS DOWN AS HE RELIVES THE ACTION

An emotional Dr Malinga broke down when he recalled how no one offered him a helping hand in his time of need.

Reliving the auction, which he says he attended, he said: “Auction is painful, I was there, I went there and then I wanted to say ‘please it’s not like I don’t want to pay, I don’t have money. I am not being called at gigs and I can’t force people to book me.’

“I’m used to giving, I’m not used to receiving. Every time I give, people they don’t come back for me,” Dr Malinga said as he broke down.
