Bahumi Mhlongo, daughter of media personality Somizi Mhlongo made her debut on Mzansi Magic’s Umbuso on Sunday 3 April at 20:00.

Somizi had all eyes on his daughter when he shared that she is a first generation graduate via an Instagram post on 26 March. The media personality also shared that he paid more than R2 million rand in school fees for Bahumi, who studied at AFDA.

Bahumi plays the role of Refilwe Matlala on Mzansi Magic’s Umbuso. She described acting in the series as a new level of excitement. Umbuso stars the likes of Lilian Dube, Sandile Mahlangu and more.

“I’m really, really excited about this role. Every time I say it, I think it’s going to get boring, but it really doesn’t. It’s like a new level of excitement,” she told Channel 24.

Bahumi went on to say that her character may be different to her but they are also alike. She said that they have similar experiences and come from similar family backgrounds.

“She’s [Refilwe Matlala] quite interesting. And I’m just really keen to see how, how she materialises on screen. She’s quite the character; she and I are as different as we are alike. We have similar experiences and backgrounds, maybe in different industries, but similar family backgrounds,” she continued.

“She excites me. I really hope that people receive her. I judged her at first, to be quite honest. I hope people will just let their guard down with her and get to see who she is,” she added.

Bahumi also said that her character allowed her to push herself as a performer. This is because her character has a strong personality, both sassy and subdued.

“I was hoping that I could push myself, but she really showed me that I can. She exposed my capabilities as a performer, which is really exciting. I really love her range. At one point, she’s quite sassy, and the next, she is quite subdued. You also see her internal flaws and her personal battles,” she added.
